Back in February, RPI picked up a commitment from ’04 RD Charlie Lieberman. Lieberman is a huge defenseman especially for his age as he is listed at 6’4″ and 225 LBs. He played most of the year for the Selects Academy 18U team where he posted 7 goals, 18 assists and 25 points in 60 games. At the end of the season, he moved over to the NAHL with the Janesville Jets where he had 2 assists in 9 games and a +4 rating. He has signed a tender with Janesville to play for them next year.
Lieberman profiles as a huge defensive defenseman. He is very physical and “plays like a freight train… Anyone who’s in his vicinity while carrying the puck is getting hit” according to Neutral Zone. His skating is pretty good for his size, which allows him to play a tight gap in his own zone. He uses his reach and physicality to separate opposing players from the puck and get the puck out of his end. On the breakout, he makes the smart and simple play to get the puck moving up the ice. He also has a heavy shot, which gives him some offensive ability to go with his strong play in his own end.
With his ’04 birthdate and tender with the Janesville Jets, we expect Lieberman to enroll in the Fall of 2024. He will likely either play 2 seasons with the Jets before coming to RPI, or he will play 1 season before moving up to the USHL and then coming to RPI. Either option is great for his development as 2 years in junior hockey will prepare him very well for college hockey. When he arrives in Troy, he will contribute a lot as a shutdown defenseman and add a great physical edge to the Engineers. We can’t wait to watch him develop until then. Congratulations to Charlie and his family!
